There is a new look and feel online at Clarington Public Library. Take some time to explore the site and let us know what you think of it. Most of the site is in a "blog" format that allows library staff to post content at any time, so watch for more book suggestions and feel free to leave comments. You will find all listings of new library materials in the three blog sections, "Children", "Teens" and "Adult", listed along the tabs at the top. And don't forget to hit the "next" button on the bottom of each page to see more entries. Having trouble finding what you are looking for? This entire site is keyword searchable by using the top right search box. Also there are "library information" and "quick links" menus on the left-hand side of the home page that allow you to navigate the site easily.

Evergreen Reading Award

Here is your opportunity to vote for your favourite book by a Canadian author!

Cast your ballot for the work of Canadian fiction or non-fiction that you like the most, and see which title will come out on top! Vote anytime, up to and including Sunday, October 10th. Winners will be announced in January 2011.

Visit any branch for your ballot, and submit your vote for your favourite book from the following titles nominated by the Ontario Library Association Evergreen Award program.

World War II Story Sharing

image of WWII memorabilia Food rationing and long line ups, victory gardens and curfews, air raid sirens and bomb shelters. Not too long ago, these things were part of everyday life for those going through the war on the home front.

The Clarington Public Library recently hosted a Pass the Book event at the Newcastle Branch, inviting people to share their recollections and memorabilia from the Second World War. Join members of your community as they share their memories, and experience what it was like to huddle in an air raid shelter with your classmates, rush to the shops with ration coupons clutched in your hand, or listen to bombers flying overhead.

Pass the Book Grand Prize Draw

Have you read this year's Pass the Book community read, The Factory Voice by Jeanette Lynes?

Once you have, be sure to fill out a ballot for a chance at the Grand Prize Draw - you could win a trip for two to Ottawa to visit the Canadian War Museum! Simply pick up a ballot at any branch, or print it out here. Once you have answered the questions correctly, drop off your completed ballot at any branch of the Clarington Public Library before September 18th.You can also submit your ballot online on the Pass the Book website.

The draw will take place on September 24th at the 1940s Gala Social and Dance at the Jubille Pavilion, Lakeview Park in Oshawa, but you do not have to be in attendance at the dance to win. Come out for an evening of Big Band music, Swing dancing, vintage cars, hors d'oeuvres and desserts, with prizes for the best 40's outfits! Tickets are $25 each available at any branch of the Oshawa Public Libraries.

Healthy Families Collection

In May, the Bowmanville Branch officially launched the library's Healthy Families collection, in partnership with Kinark Child and Family Services. The collection is aimed mostly at parents but some materials are aimed at children and teens. The collection aims to provide information and support for families who are struggling with mental health issues in children and teens. The Healthy Families collection includes materials on things such as learning disabilities, anger management, autism, Asperger Syndrome, bullying, divorce, bipolar disorder, addictions, parenting and eating disorders.

Tuesday, October 26th, there will be an Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) workshop at the Bowmanville branch, led by Dr. Kevin Nugent. Space is limited and those interested in attending are asked to register for this free program by phone or in person at any branch. The workshop will focus on ADHD in children and youth, and refreshments will be provided. The Healthy Families collection is housed next to the Parent/Teacher collection on the first floor of the Bowmanville Branch.
