Each c_wonder STEM Workshop introduces participants to the fundamentals of the engineering design process as they tackle design challenges that puts their STEM knowledge to the test. Students will get a chance to explore different STEM fields and how engineering can solve its diverse and real-world issues.

Presented in partnership with Engineering Outreach, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, Ontario Tech University.

Please note that caregivers of children under the age of 10 must be present in the Library for the duration of the program.

In this workshop, participants will gain an understanding of automotive engineering, forces acting on a vehicle, and design factors that make vehicles more efficient. Participants will be challenged to design an efficient vehicle powered by a chemical reaction. Using the engineering design process, participants will learn about the forces acting on their cars and make adjustments to their design to improve efficiency and speed. In this fun, learning-filled environment, participants will have the opportunity to make discoveries, think critically, and solve problems.

Follow along on a tour of the former Mohawk Institute (1831-1970), the first and longest running Indian Residential School in Canada.

The virtual tour looks at the dormitory building prior to the onset of restoration work during the Save the Evidence campaign. Dating from 1904, the current building tour takes visitors from floor to floor and provides historical information with Survivor accounts of their time at the “Mush Hole.”

After the recorded portion, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and share comments with a Cultural Interpreter.

This course teaches youth the fundamental skills they need to start their own babysitting service. A Red Cross certified instructor from React Right Safety Services teaches the class.

Topics include:

  • How to give appropriate care for infants, toddlers and school-aged children;
  • Dealing with basic First Aid emergencies;
  • How to recognize potential hazards;
  • What parents expect of a babysitter;
  • How to safely find customers; and
  • Rural babysitting.

Note: Bring a teddy bear to practice on!

This Canadian Safety Council course gives youth the tools and information they need to stay at home alone for short periods of time. The course is facilitated by Red Cross certified instructors from React Right Safety Services.

Topics include:

  • Looking after the house key (make a key chain);
  • Preparing healthy snacks;*
  • Walking home;
  • Appropriate activities when home alone;
  • Electrical/fire safety;
  • Basic First Aid; and
  • Problem solving (house broken into, severe weather).

*Note: A healthy snack will be prepared during this program. Please advise staff of any allergies at time of registration.
