Get the tax help you need at a free virtual clinic, hosted in partnership with Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP). Volunteers will provide personal tax preparation assistance virtually for low-income individuals and their dependents for the 2020 tax year.

The clinic is available for individuals without dependents with a gross income of less than $35,000, or for families consisted of up to 2 individuals and their dependents with a gross income of less than:

  • 2 Persons - $45,000;
  • 3 Persons - $47,500;
  • 4 Persons - $50,000;
  • 5 Persons - $52,500;
  • More than 5 Persons - $52,500 plus $2,500 for each additional person.

Registration Notes

  • Attendees will be contacted by a CVITP Volunteer to determine their exact appointment time and provide information on preparing for their appointment.
  • Registrants must agree to eligibility and authorization disclaimers.
  • Each appointment can consist of one (1) dependent family (two (2) adults and their dependents). Families with non-dependents should make a second appointment.

Income Eligibility Disclaimer

Clients will be asked to present documentation at the start of the appointment to verify they are qualified for this service. You must meet the criteria at the time of the appointment, or you will not be served.

Assistance is provided for the 2020 tax year only.

Total family income is under:

  • 1 Person - $35,000;
  • 2 Persons - $45,000;
  • 3 Persons - $47,500;
  • 4 Person - $50,000;
  • 5 Person - $52,500;
  • More than 5 Persons - $52,500 plus $2,500 for each additional person.

Volunteers cannot prepare complex returns, such as returns for individuals who:

  • are self-employed or have employment expenses* (please see exception below);
  • have business income and expenses;
  • have rental income and expenses;
  • have interest income over $1,000;
  • have capital gains or losses;
  • filed for bankruptcy in the tax year (or the year before, if that return has not yet been filed);
  • are completing a tax return for a deceased person; or
  • have foreign property (T1135)

* Simple tax exception:
Individuals who have a T4A slip, Statement of Pension, Retirement, Annuity, and Other Income, that shows self-employed or business in box 048 may be eligible to have their return completed through the CVITP if the following conditions are met:

  • The CVITP volunteer is comfortable in preparing a return with the T4A income;
  • The total income in box 048 is under $1,000;
  • No expenses are claimed; and
  • The taxpayer is not registered as a GST/HST registrant and is not required to be one.

Consent and Authorization Disclaimer

1. Due to the conditions presented by COVID 19, Clarington Public Library is not able to offer the usual in-person assistance to prepare and file your income tax and benefits return. Instead, the service is being provided using alternative communication methods. In completing your tax return, volunteers will be discussing information that is personal to you. The methods that they will use to communicate with you may not be secure. While all reasonable efforts have been made to ensure that your personal information is protected during the course of the required communications, volunteers cannot guarantee this. 

Participants must consent to the use of a cell phone, cordless telephone and/or potentially unsecure email for the purpose of discussions, communications, transmission of documents pertaining to completing their income tax and benefits return(s).

2. Your acknowledgement and consent is required before a CVITP volunteer can proceed with completing your return. A volunteer from the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program will prepare your income tax and benefits return(s) electronically with the information that is supplied by you. You understand that the volunteer is acting in the capacity of a volunteer that is affiliated with Clarington Public Library to provide this service to you. The volunteer is not an agent or a representative of the Canada Revenue Agency.

Participants must consent to a volunteer completing their tax return.
